Iceland! We knew we were only going to have three days and wanted to make our journey efficient. We asked Lieven from IJslandreizen – a specialized travel agent conveniently located in our street in Ghent– to advise us. We rented a car and booked a three-night stay in Reykjavik, which was going to be our base camp. Perfect to visit southern Iceland.

What we discovered was a beautiful, pure country with unseen landscapes, authentic and friendly people, and a capital where nature, design, creativity, architecture, cosy restaurants and coffeehouses come together in a perfect mix.

We did a glacier hike on the Sólheimajökull, guided by the experienced and ever smiling Örn Árnason from Arctic Adventures. It was not the white and blue glacier we expected, but a grey, white and black mass covered with volcanic ash, which gave it an unearthly look. Just like a decor for Star Wars.  We were only six, which was awesome, and for us, and for the guide. We put our crampons on and started our walk. We loved it. It got even better when we did the rappelling in the crater and had to climb back up with the ice axes. Exhilarating.

We saw geysers in action, petted the most beautiful and not-shy-at-all horses ever. On the other hand we met the cutest sheepish sheep that did not like to be photographed. We saw the touristy Blue Lagoon with its excellent and ecological infrastructure built around it and stood in awe for powerful waterfalls. We discovered small harbour villages and ate with the local fishermen. In Reykjavik we had the best lunch in Sjavarbarinn, near the old harbour, with an all you can eat seafood buffet. Furthermore we ate hip food in hip places like Laundromat.

We drove to Þingvellir National Park and saw how beautiful it is. Iceland sits atop the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Here you can see the drifitng apart of two tectonic plates. The view from the information centre is stunning and you can do beautiful hikes in the park.

In Reykjanes we climbed on cliffs and were happy we did not fall off.

Conclusion, we love Iceland and no we have seen nothing yet. We will be back.
